I will best try to unravel the language behind Oud, Agarwood and Kynam.
To begin with Agarwood, Eaglewood or Aloeswood is not a species of wood. They are all words describing any species of wood that has been infected by a bacteria that migrates throughout a tree over it’s lifetime, and which could even be up to 600 years old, or more Oud.
Oud meaning Old, is a word that describes infected wood, which has had enough time to earn the title “Oud bearing”, it is not at an early stage of infection. As it is a bacteria, it may be present on a fallen tree, or even a piece of dormant wood (even a piece of furniture).
For example, a piece of furniture made from Agarwood, will in time develop the same characteristics of Kynam, from where an Oud oil, or Oud shavings can be extracted and atomised.
Kynam, is another word for aged Agarwood, and Oud is extracted from Kynam.
I hope this is correct, I have limited knowledge on the subject, however should you wish to learn more follow Ensar (EnsarOud.com) to gain a deeper understanding of the subject.
If you read this Ensar, I hope you feel free to correct me if I have miss interrupted the meanings behind these terms, or can better explain something that is such a mystery to so many of us. God Bless.
